Guys, if you like games, you really should be playing A Dark Room and the brand new sequel The Ensign.
A Dark Room is really quite brilliant, a small, careful game that sucks you slowly into its world. You start out so so simply, with a fire and a room. Slowly you build a village. Make buildings. Go exploring. The more advanced you get, the farther you are able to explore, and the more you learn about this world and yourself. And you’re not going to like what you see.
This game is only a dollar to download, and it’s worth it. When you beat it, it gives you some fascinating special sound clips that talk about the game development, as well as a hint for how to get an alternate ending. (Also, the developers talk about the main character as “she”. There was absolutely nothing in the game that indicated the character was female, so one would tend to assume by default that it’s a male character, but the developers went against expectation and say it’s a she and I love that)
And just today, they released a sequel called The Ensign. I’ve only played it for a couple hours and it’s already blowing my mind.
It starts out with the familiar exploration, but there’s no save game function and the game resets when you die. I was getting frustrated constantly dying.
But the game kept giving me encouraging messages when I died, about grit and perseverance, and I kept at it.
…now it appears it doesn’t quite completely reset, and I’m making some strange kind of progress after all, and the encouraging messages have turned malevolent and mocking…
Oh I’m so interested to see where this leads.
Check these games out. And whoever says you need fancy graphics to make a good game can stick it up their ass.
